Athletics shines like a diamond in Morocco with Mondo athletics track: the new Stade Olympique de Rabat

The Mohammed VI International Meeting, the fourth stage of the World Athletics Wanda Diamond League, took place in this newly built stadium, whose main athletics track was equipped with Mondotrack. The adjacent warm-up track also features Mondo's Sportflex Super X 720 athletic surface.

Morocco's commitment to building large-scale sports facilities continues unabated, and the capital, Rabat, is witnessing the construction of world-class infrastructure. In 2023, the Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the largest in the Moroccan capital and one of the most important in the country, was closed for renovations in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The project eliminated the stadium's covered athletics track, but not the country's dedication to the sport. Thus, the Stade Olympique de Rabat was built next to the Moulay Abdellah Stadium, intended to host major athletics competitions. Inaugurated on May 25th on the occasion of the 16th Mohammed VI International Athletics Meeting, the fourth stage of the 2025 World Athletics Wanda Diamond League calendar, this new stadium was equipped with Mondotrack flooring by Mondo. A warm-up track, also certified by the company, was built next to it, with Sportflex Super X 720 K39 flooring. Thanks to the support of the high-quality Mondo flooring, the Stade Olympique track has obtained the stringent World Athletics Class 1 certification, while the training track has been certified as Class 2.

Stade Olympique de Rabat

With a capacity of 21,000 spectators and a distinctive crescent roof, the new Stade Olympique de Rabat features a central grass pitch surrounded by a nine-lane athletics track with lanes for jumping and throwing. The entire competition area is equipped with Mondotrack athletics track surrounded by a perimeter that extends all the way to the stands, where Sportflex Super X 720 athletics flooring has been installed.

Mondotrack athletics track installed on the central pitch is World Athletics certified.

The Stade Olympique de Rabat will host high-level athletics competitions and, on schedule, also football matches. Among other events, it will host the group stage matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which begins at the end of the year.

The warm up track

Construction of the Stade Olympique de Rabat was completed with the addition of another new 400-meter training track, featuring a 13.5-millimeter-thick Sportflex Super X 720 K39 athletics surface. This system, also certified by World Athletics, offers the ideal combination of energy return, comfort, safety, and durability.

The central track and warm-up track at the Moulay Abdellah Complex comprise a total of approximately 24,000 square meters of Mondo athletics flooring.

Wanda Diamond League Morocco: A Debut with Big Names

The Stade Olympique de Rabat opened its doors on May 25 for the Mohammed VI International Athletics Meeting, the fourth stage of the World Athletics Wanda Diamond League 2025. The event brought together top-level athletes from 40 nations, and the results on Mondotrack athletics track did not disappoint: South Africa's Akani Simbine ran the 100 meters in 9.95 seconds, Netherlands' Femke Bol set a new meeting record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.46 seconds, and Kenya's Beatrice Chebet set a new African and Diamond League record in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:11.56.

Chebet gave her first warning in Rabat and confirmed her success last weekend at the Diamond League event in Eugene, USA, setting a world record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:58.6. Chebet thus became the first woman to run under 14 minutes.

From the Olympic Stadium to the ....endless athletics track.

The construction of the Stade Olympique de Rabat and its adjacent warm-up track joins another recently built athletics track in the Moroccan capital, also branded Mondo: the Lycée d'Excellence Stadium (Lydex) on the campus of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). This unique track features a distinctive lemniscate (a figure eight evoking the symbol for infinity) that merges with another circular central track. The competition areas, however, are separated from the main track outside the stadium. The entire installation covers over 25,000 square meters of Sportflex Super X 720 K39 sports flooring.
